Birthdays + The North Carolina Mountains Make Me Happy.

photo.JPG
Last weekend I made a trip back to my home state of North Carolina in good great company.

Ready for a fun (& adventurous!) weekend, Zack, Bella and I made our way to Lake Lure on Friday to my grandparent's house. A Pennsylvania native and current Charleston resident, Zack had never been to the mountains in North Carolina and I was so excited to show him the beautiful region.

We started our weekend with a "hike." I say hike hesitantly because in reality, we really just climbed over a thousand stairs to the top of Chimney Rock. However, I honestly think this may have been more strenuous than hiking because my calves were burning. Just ask Zack if I enjoyed the climb. Regardless, the climbing was worth it when we got to the top and saw the beautiful view.

Then, we decided to go up the mountain to the highest point of the park - Exclamation Point (anyone else excited about some grammar puns?). This was more of a hiking trail which I was genuinely enjoying until I heard a slight rustle and hiss, saw the origin of the noise(clearly a snake) and almost knocked Zack on his face by jumping on his back and screaming. There is no doubt in my mind that thing was poisionous and out for my blood.  Needless to say, from this point on I couldn't wait to get to the bottom to enjoy some Peanut Butter Caramel ice cream.

The most important day and reason of the trip was Saturday - Zack's Birthday! Old man turned 20. Still not sure how I feel about dating an older man.

We woke up at the break of dawn, packed some snacks, made breakfast, and headed out to Barnardsville, NC for a ziplining excursion with Navitat. This alone was worth the trip. Barnardsville is just 20 minutes north of Asheville so if you're ever in the area, don't pass up this opportunity. I mean, look how much fun we had. Really looking forward to going back to do the night tour.

After flying through the trees, we drove to downtown Asheville - one of my favorite places. For his birthday lunch, I took Zack to Tupelo Honey Cafe (Is it okay that I took him to [one of] my favorite restaurants for his birthday?). We opted for splitting the Beef Stroganoff over goat cheese grits which was pretty delicious.

We spent the rest of the afternoon strolling through Woolworth's + The Grove Arcade, listening to street musicians, window shopping and enjoying coffee on a double decker bus. The story behind this bus was so much fun to listen to - make sure to stop by Double D's Coffee & Desserts and have the barista tell you the full story including how it made its way from a party bus in Atlanta to a cafe in Asheville.

For Zack's birthday dinner - I cooked. I found out that cooking is very timely, considering I began making my dish on Wednesday evening. I chose to make spaghetti and meatballs - from scratch. A homemade marinara with homemade turkey meatballs with whole grain pasta. For dessert, I made a no-bake cheesecake in a oreo crust with homemade strawberry drizzle. If I had the time & the money (and the metabolism), I'd cook like this every night.

But, what made me happiest was being able to spend Zack's birthday with him and making it a great day for both of us. I was also grateful that my family was able to wish him a happy birthday. Now, I need a new adventure on my calendar to look forward to...this one will be hard to top.

Mommy Time Makes Me Happy.

Am I too old to call my mother, "mommy?"

This past weekend my mom came down to see me so I could treat her to a Mother's Day weekend in Columbia. Since I've essentially started my life away from home (apartment, job, school..) seeing my Mom consistently has been something I've struggled doing. I was so excited to finally show her my home-away-from-home.

We started our weekend with a delicious dinner at Hunter-Gatherer brewery. Here's a picture of my mom thoroughly enjoying our night.

We were really excited when we found out HG was going to have live jazz. (Even more excited that the guy who sold us our ticket looked like Tim Curry from Rocky Horror - Right, Mom?)

One of Thursday night's special was a scallops dish over pasta. Naturally, being seafood-fiends we chose to split the scallops and a salad covered in bleu cheese. We both left full - but not over-stuffed - and laughing out the door. I'd say it was a good night.

We decided the next day we'd do our part in fueling the Columbia economy: antiquing.

North Carolina is common ground for us so we were excited to set out in Columbia for a day of rummaging. We were disappointed to find Spring Valley Antique Mall closed unexpectedly for inventory but found a great place across the street called Ivy House.

I need this bike!

If you've seen my apartment, you know that I love trunks and suitcases posing as tables. I had to stop myself from buying these because, realistically, where would they go?! I did end up buying a cool vintage elephant gold necklace.

After we finished at our first shop, we went out to Meeting Street for lunch at Cafe Strudel and some West Columbia shopping. We managed not purchasing anything (which is a real feat for us) until we made it to City Market on Gervais. This is where Mom found the cool stuff.

There was a whole crate of old, what appeared to be hand-painted, drawers. Any other person would look at these and just see the fronts of drawers, but I could tell Mom's crafty wheels were turning as she added them to her pile of treasures.

We ended a long day of shopping with a huge dinner from Takosushi. My favorite thing to do here is start out with some Guac + chips and then continue with sushi. It might sound a little mixed up, but just trust me on this one. From there, I recommend the Crazy Roll and the KC Roll. If you're lucky you'll find someone like my mom who will order five different things with you and just eat a little of everything!

No roll left behind!

We woke on Saturday and walked down to the All Local Farmer's Market for some fresh bread, a new piece of jewelry, and a chance to walk my pup & enjoy some fresh air. If you live in Columbia and have a free Saturday morning, stop by the market! You really never know what you're going to come across.

I'm happy I could treat my mom to a fun getaway and show her my life here in Columbia. Looking forward to many more.

So, finally, to answer my original question, no. You're never too old to call her Mommy.

Ever.
